EPSY 637 - Multicultural Counseling Units: 3 Multicultural counseling and psychotherapy, cultural values and personality formation; value orientation inherent in counseling and psychotherapy; psychological effects of cultural racism; effects of sex roles and life styles within different cultures.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - How race, culture and socio-political economic conditions may influence the counseling process.
- Students’ own cultural background and biases and how they might impact counseling.
- How to work within each unique client’s cultural context in counseling.
- How therapeutic approaches and strategies need to fit the unique qualities of each client.
- Facilitating communication and professional, collaborative relationships in multicultural settings.
- Recognizing common problems and patterns of problematic interactions or biased views of cultural diversity.
- Integrating strategies to work with clients of diverse cultures.
- Applying an Equity, Diversity, and Social Justice model of service delivery.
