EPSY 634 - Family and Life Cycle Development Units: 3 Theory and research covering family and life cycle development. Emphasis on the interaction of biological and social factors and their psychological consequences.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Ability to articulate the basic themes and tasks associated with the Expanded Family Life Cycle stages of development as defined by Monica McGoldrick, Betty Carter, and Nydia Garcia-Preto (2011).
- Understand the basic tenants of Bowenian theory and how intergenerational patterns inform development.
- Understand how culture frames life cycle developmental tasks and experiences.
- Understand possible ways in which dynamics of social privilege and marginalization (as they relate to various facets of culture) may be central to the development of family patterns, and consequently, both difficulties and resilience in progressing through life cycle stages of development.
- Develop a richer awareness of one’s own experiences of life cycle development through a multicultural lens.
- Develop increased competence in interviewing others about family patterns, culture, and socio-cultural privilege and marginalization as these themes apply to development across the life cycle.
