SPED 604 - Individual and School-Wide Behavioral Needs, Mental Health & Positive Supports


Units: 4
Prepares Specialists and other professionals to provide coordinated educational services through evidence-based strategies: individual and school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS); social emotional learning as prevention and intervention; classroom management; mental health intervention and community resources to support students/families.

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Special Education program.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Effectively collaborate with involved others to positively support individual and group behavior plans. Demonstrate the ability to conduct a functional assessment of problem behavior (FBA).
  2. Demonstrate knowledge about components of positive behavior management plans and the techniques of positive behavior intervention.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and process of behavior management approaches such as reinforcement theory, functional assessments, positive behavioral support, and social and interpersonal techniques to manage behavior.
  4. Develop a Comprehensive Positive Behavior Support Plan Demonstrate knowledge of self-management and regulation techniques.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose, process and outcomes of social-emotional learning strategies.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and process and outcomes of evidence-based School Wide PBIS.
  7. Articulate understanding of and apply evidence-based classroom management strategies and approaches.
  8. Articulate understanding of and apply evidence-based classroom management strategies and approaches.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of  school and community-based mental health  interventions and evidence regarding their effectiveness.
