PHIL 371 - Philosophy of Education


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Social Justice
Philosophical examination of educational theories and of their applications in various cultural and social contexts.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. To reflect on your own educational experiences and think about what they mean for you
  2. To delve deeply into the ideas of a few major thinkers in the Philosophy of Education
  3. To explore your capacity for textual exegesis and explication (reading, interpreting, and writing about complex ideas and arguments)
  4. To think more clearly through writing. To be able to express and argue for your views more effectively through clear writing and argumentation.
