Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Discuss, in general terms, how selected short stories from primarily American writers represent the development of the form from its beginnings to present.
Identify the formal features of the short story and their different manifestations in varied periods and schools.
Demonstrate (a) an ability to analyze and/or explicate certain passages or complete short stories in written responses, and (b) an ability to use such critical methods to illuminate and complicate a reading of the stories that invite a deeper critical scrutiny.
A developed taste for particular schools or trends in the short story based on wide reading, comparison, and reasoned preference.
