MLL 431 - Linguistics in American Sign Language Units: 3 The linguistics of American Sign Language. Structural rules governing ASL grammar. Phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics of ASL Linguistics.
Prerequisites: MLL 332. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Hybrid. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the basic concepts in linguistic study.
- Understand and be able to explain the terminology unique to linguistics.
- Significantly expand ASL vocabulary and conversational skills, expressively and receptively, by participating in an immersion environment.
- Learn appropriate interactive strategies in conversation, such as requesting clarification, interrupting, turn taking etc
- Demonstrate an increased awareness of the differences and similarities between ASL and English.
- Have an understanding of the basic phonology and morphology of ASL.
- Be able to notate signs in different transcription systems.
- Understand the phonological processes and how they impact ASL.
