MLL 231 - American Sign Language III: American Sign Language and Deaf Cultures


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-C2
First course in the second year ASL sequence. Focuses on appropriate cultural behaviors and conversational regulators in ASL.

Prerequisites: MLL 132.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-C2 - Lower Division Humanities

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Engage in group conversations and exchange information and opinions on a variety of topics.
  2. Comprehend and express topics in large group and on video.
  3. Compare and contrast ASL with English and also, Deaf culture with one’s own culture.
  4. Engage in social interactions (through service learning) that are acceptable within Deaf culture.
  5. Develop broader, more informed viewpoints of Deaf people and their life experience through critical thinking and Deafhood concepts.
  6. Engage in large group discussions using ASL to access information about the Deaf community/culture through service learning, which will lead to lifelong learning experiences. 
  7. Continue use VGC to develop stronger fundamental skills for visual communication and fluency with a visual language.
  8. Learn and practice ASL’s object-subject-verb (OSV) structure, rather than using English structure: subject-verb-object.


C2. Humanities Learning Outcomes
 

  1. Show appreciation for the humanities using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
  2. develop their affective and cognitive faculties through studying great works reflecting the rich diversity of human imagination and/or inquiry; and
  3. engage in critical self-reflection relating themes in the humanities to the students’ own lives.
