ENGL 350 - Study of Language


Units: 4
Theory of language and communication; role of language in the personal and social development of the fully “human” being; origins, development, acquisition, and diversity of language; nature and function of symbolic systems; phonology, morphology, syntax, orthography, sign language, and semantics.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. To introduce you to the fundamental concepts, notions, terms and definitions of linguistics, especially in the areas of phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, and to the major components of languages such as speech sounds, speech sound system, word category and formation, types and structures of phrase, clause and sentence, and meanings of phrase, clause and sentence;
  2. To familiarize you with basic ways, methods and techniques of linguistic analysis, especially the analysis of speech sound production and features, distinctive/non-distinctive speech sounds, distribution of speech sounds, phonological processes, word and phrasal categories, the components, structures and formation of words, and the types, structures and formation of phrases, clauses and sentences;
  3. To train you to do a comparative study of English and other languages to discover their similarities and differences, and to recognize the common core shared by all human languages, which will enable you to acquire linguistic techniques and skills to communicate with each other more effectively;
  4. To help you to develop an inclusive view of languages and a respect for language diversity, as all languages are equal in value and dignity and form an integral part of global culture and civilization. To enhance your cognitive, critical thinking and analytic skills, strengthen your reading and writing skills, and further cultivate your linguistic skills.
