HIST 404 - Teaching History-Social Science Units: 4 Investigation of history-social science learning. Students will create and practice active-learning exercises in simulated classrooms, develop assessment and equity measures for diverse learners, and apply to credential programs. Students will participate in a teaching demonstration at Wanda Washington History Conference.
Prerequisites: HIST 400 for BA History-Social Science students. Permission required for enrollment for BA History-Social Science students. HIST 201 for BA HIST students. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify and review scholarship of teaching and learning for the fields of history and social science, with special consideration of “historical thinking” research.
- Practice pedagogical strategies for effective delivery, engagement, and investigation of specialized history-social science disciplinary knowledge and thinking, with an emphasis on middle and high schools;
- Connect pedagogical practices and history-social science content to California state standards, frameworks, and curricula for History-Social Science;
- Collaborate with students and faculty to support effective, equitable classroom teaching and assessment for diverse learners;
- Locate application requirements and timelines for single subject credential programs in history-social science and complete key components of a draft application.
- Present teaching demonstrations in person or via video recording at the Wanda Washington History Conference.
