TED 552 - World Languages II: Instructional Methods in a Single Subject Classroom - LOTE/ELD Units: 3 Intermediate course in the practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom differentiated for the teaching of languages other than English and English language development. Satisfies the CTC requirements for adding World Language and/or English Language Development subject authorization.
Prerequisites: Admission to Single Subject Credential Program. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Design and implement differentiated instruction based on the levels of language proficiency and the individual needs and strengths of the range of language learners in their classroom.
- Provide integrated proficiency- and communication-based instruction and assessment with a commitment to teaching and learning using the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including the use of assessment results to inform and plan instruction that advances language and literacy skills for all language students.
- Provide writing instruction (or productive for ASL) on conventions, domains, research, and applications that address all ranges of language proficiency.
- Design language instruction that improves students’ ability to critique texts and media for point of view, bias, power, validity, truthfulness, persuasive techniques, and appeal to both friendly and critical audiences.
- Teach students about the norms and values of target cultures [for LOTE this is target culture(s) and for ELD this is U.S. cultures], the culture of schooling, and how to access school and community resources.
- Design instruction that provides academic language development instruction emphasizing discourse that leads to the production of complex texts over time and targeting developing language and literacy skill development.
- Effectively use technology to support and enhance their instruction as well as instruct students on how to utilize it as a tool for conducting research.
- Use reflective practice through critical analysis, problem-solving, and self-assessment to facilitate professional growth as a world language teacher and to promote student self-reflection as a world language learner.
