TED 551 - World Languages I: Instructional Methods in a Single Subject Classroom - LOTE/ELD Units: 3
Introductory course in the practice of instructional methodology in a single subject classroom, differentiated for the teaching of languages other than English and English language development. Does not satisfy requirements for adding World Language and/or English Language Development subject authorization.
Prerequisites: Admission to Single Subject Credential Program. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Categorize and compare CA WL Standards or CA ELD Standards and proficiency ranges in order to design effective standards-based instruction and assessment.
- Describe and analyze essential considerations within the CA World Languages Framework or the CA ELA/ELD Framework as they apply to implementing standards in the language classroom.
- Design and implement a research- and standards-based lesson plan which includes instruction that improves students’ reading comprehension, including students’ ability to access grade-level texts of increasing depth and complexity, and activate background knowledge, make connections, synthesize information, and evaluate texts.
- Design instruction that provides systematic vocabulary development that emphasizes high utility words used across curricular areas.
- Define the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPE) and the edTPA and describe the relationship between these, language teaching (LOTE or ELD), and candidate assessment.
