SPED 615 - Fieldwork I: Extensive Support Needs Units: 3 Links theory and practice within supervised fieldwork in a public school setting for developing candidates’ specialized skills and practices, including assessment, systematic instruction, positive behavior supports/intervention, Universal Design for Learning, adaptation and modification, and team collaboration.
Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Special Education program. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: CR/NC grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in managing learning environments for diverse learners that are safe and effective and that facilitate positive self-esteem and self -advocacy.
- Select and implement appropriate instructional methods and strategies for individual students with diverse learning and language abilities.
- Demonstrate a high level of professional behavior and responsibility at the school (and at CSUEB) including timeliness, courtesy, collaboration, and adherence to administrative regulations and protocol as established by the district, school and/or the assigned site Master Teacher.
- Effectively carry out existing individual instructional programs designed by the Master Teacher.
- Design and implement sound instructional programs based upon the assumption that every child can learn.
- Utilize positive behavior management techniques in individual and group activities, and consistently administer effective consequences.
- Analyze teacher behavior (including their own) in terms of components of instruction and classroom management.
- Demonstrate competence in data collection procedures, appropriate methods of presenting data, and using data to make decisions.
- Design and employ individual and group strategies, interventions and instructional tools that reflect understanding and utilization of evidence-based Universal Design for Learning.
- Motivate student interest in a variety of ways, including selection of meaningful curricula, successful participation in activities and the effective use of reinforcement and feedback.
- Utilize a variety of research-based and effective teaching practices that achieve targeted student outcomes, and employ student outcome data to systematically monitor progress, modify instruction and learning environments.
- Demonstrate knowledge of effective classroom management models and develop a personnel management plan.
- Demonstrate knowledge of techniques that promote self-advocacy for individuals with disabilities and that encourage personal and social responsibility and independence.
