TED 672 - Reading and Language Arts: Adolescent Literacy


Units: 3
This course addresses adolescent literacy and teaching practices to support literacy engagement for adolescents. There is an emphasis on valuing adolescents, developing literacy strategies to teach adolescents, developing disciplinary literacies, and addressing program and policy issues.

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. in Reading and Literacy or Reading and Literacy Added Authorization.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

1. Evaluate cognitive and sociocultural aspects of adolescent literacy instruction;

2. Recognize, engage, and celebrate adolescent’s social, cultural, and literacy assets and the importance of applying principles of best practice when designing effective adolescent literacy instruction;

3. Develop proactive, assets-based, anti-racist opportunities for adolescent youth;

4. Explore the importance of understanding and building on adolescent’s connections with texts;

5. Evaluate best teaching practices for teaching strategies for reading and writing in youth;

6. Describe program and policy issues for adolescent literacy and growing communities of practice in secondary schools.
