TED 671 - Reading and Language Arts: Multilingual Learners


Units: 3
Literacy acquisition for children who are multilingual learners in PK-12 classrooms. Cultural and historical aspects of multilingualism. Methods and approaches that support high degrees of academic language development based on current research in biliteracy. Course may be taught bilingually.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

1. Recognize the diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds of multilingual learners learners, and special populations in a bilingual classroom settings;

2. Examine in methodologically sound research and exposed to instructional programs in English and Spanish adopted by the State Board of Education;

3. Develop a comprehensive program of English and Spanish reading/language arts and English Language Development instruction including systematic, explicit and meaningfully-applied instruction in reading, writing, and related language skills that is aligned with the student content standards in English/Language Arts and English Language Development, and the Reading/Language Arts Framework [BTPE 3,4,5]

4. Utilize student background knowledge and vocabulary, and teach reading comprehension strategies such as analysis of text structure, summarizing, questioning, and making inferences [BTPE 1,3,4]

5. Promote the use of oral language in English and Spanish in a variety of formal and informal settings [BTPE 1,2,3,4]

6. Examine the importance of the roles of home and community literacy practices [BTPE 1,2,3]

7. Explain the value of a multilingual and intercultural classroom climate and school community and its influence on students’ motivation, participation and achievement. (BPTE 3,4)

8. Actively promote authentic parental participation that includes learning about school systems, assuming leadership roles and affecting policy;

9. Explain how the family is a primary language and cultural resource.
