TED 662 - Reading and Language Arts: Culture of Literacy, Focus on Diversity


Units: 2
Review research to develop a culture of literacy, capitalizing on students’ knowledge/skills to support second language development. Study cultural/linguistic factors that affect literacy development, effective instructional strategies for teaching standards-based reading/writing, literacy assessments for diverse learners.

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. in Reading and Literacy.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

 1. Demonstrate an understanding of current research on creating an effective culture of literacy designed to meet the needs of multilingual learners and diverse students;

 2. Explain reading and writing development in the context of multilingual development, with an emphasis on languages spoken in California schools;

 3. Demonstrate the ability to set and meet high expectations for all students while maintaining respect for the socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic differences that influence the literacy development of California’s diverse PK-12 student population;

 4. Demonstrate an understanding of and an ability to foster a “culture of literacy” and situate that understanding within both classroom and community contexts.
 
 5. Demonstrate the ability to modify the curriculum for and to use evidence-based methods to plan and deliver effective standards-based literacy instruction that facilitates student learning;

 6. Identify and describe effective strategies for working with diverse students, families, and communities.
