TED 630 - Advanced Language & Literacy Development in Early Childhood Education


Units: 4
Curriculum and instruction for language, writing, and literacy development in birth through eight years. Cognition, comprehension, vocabulary, concepts about print, phonemic awareness, phonics, writing development, needs of English Language Learners, and family literacy. Field Component.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Develop understanding of theoretical foundations of language & literacy development of children ages birth to eight-years-old, including the development of pre-linguistic skills, semantics, syntax, discourse skills, phonology and writing.   
  2. Apply the components of emergent literacy development including concepts about print, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, phonics, writing, cognition and comprehension.
  3. Identify theoretical and practical underpinnings of programs, methods and materials to foster emergent language and literacy.
  4. Apply practices and principles for appropriate instruction and conditions for learning as proposed by the National, State, and Local documents educating young child.
  5. Identify, describe, and evaluate a variety of factors and contemporary issues that influence curricula birth through 8-years-old.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate content knowledge, pedagogy, and skills necessary to help all students, birth to eight-years-old
  7. Develop leadership skills to become an advocate and mentor for diverse family and student learning.
  8. Utilize a variety of bibliographic tools to write a comprehensive review of the literature for a topic of professional interest in Early Childhood Education.
  9. Complete an action research project investigating a topic as it relates to the field of Early Childhood Education.
