PH 310 - Community Engaged Health Promotion Units: 3 Students will develop dynamic understandings of what constitutes a community. Focus on identifying and evaluating situations and contexts for which community engagement is pivotal for health promotion, and strategies to accomplish goals and objectives to improve public health.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: PH 300. Prerequisites: All of: PH 130, PH 250, PH 315. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Hybrid. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the term “community”, what distinguishes it from “population” and other groups of people, and the role of community in a larger civic and political context to identify and address issues in public health
- Incorporate characteristics of, and interactions between dimensions of community, dynamics among and between communities, and various stakeholder groups, and the influence of community within an appropriate ecological framework, in the execution of public health programs.
- Differentiate major elements of the community-engagement process, including community organization, development, and empowerment, as well as civic participation.
- Describe the appropriate role of community-engaged efforts in collection of data identifying human health concerns and their socioeconomic, behavioral, and environmental antecedents, as well as analysis of such data to inform and evaluate strategies addressing health disparities among and between population groups
