POSC 315 - Bay Area Politics Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D Problems and issues relevant to local and regional governments in the Bay Area. Topics and issues may include public safety, education, environment, transportation, technology, economic development, housing, public services, or power and inequality.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3, and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Show basic knowledge of urban politics theories and the concepts of White Supremacy (WS) and structural racism, and how the pillars of WS and urban political theories apply to urban environments in the Bay Area.
- Demonstrate written competency, and oral communication skills related to issues in Bay Area urban politics using empirical research in an informed and multi-dimensional manner.
- Explain the power of political institutions, structures of racism and inequality, and political processes in urban arenas and how they intersect and compete in Bay Area cities, counties, and communities.
- Discuss the role and power of taxation on local budgets, and the corresponding urban priorities such as police funding, education, economic development, and housing.
- Display an understanding of the history of urban political and economic development; suburbanization; rise of ethnic/racial, gender, and identity movements, in the Bay Area.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply what you have learned in course materials through a collaborative team project to analyze urban politics in Bay Area.
