ART 230 - Graphic Arts


Units: 3
Traditional graphic arts practices, analog and digital materials, and hand and computer based methods are used to explore creative output beyond computers while examining the relationship of historical graphic arts to current design processes, technology and equipment.

Prerequisites: ART 101 and ART 102.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Relate themes of design history, terminology and typographic conventions to the rich tradition of printing, technology advancements and social and cultural change;
  2. Explain design elements and concepts of subtractive color mixing, typographic scale and grid structure;
  3. Investigate different approaches to synthesizing analog and digital content for creative process including drawing, paper construction, bookmaking, printmaking (traditional and digital), photography;
  4. Apply traditional and experimental approaches to mark making and form construction in the context of design;
  5. Utilize knowledge of the three basic printmaking processes - relief (letterpress), planographic (offset) and intaglio (gravure) for production of graphic design artifacts;
  6. Demonstrate improved proficiency in craft, mechanical skills and hands-on techniques with attention to technical care and use of equipment, application of tools, materials, project details, patience and practice.
