ENGR 200 - Introduction to Engineering and Design


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: Second Composition
Engineering history, disciplines and professions, current global issues in engineering. Engineering design process, visualization, and graphics. Introduction to CAD, and computer tools such as spreadsheet, mathematics software, and presentation software. Teamwork skills, technical communication, engineering ethics, and critical thinking. Discussion Units: 2; Lab Units: 1.

Prerequisites: Completion of GE area A2.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Ability to use CAD, spreadsheet, database, and mathematics software to solve simple engineering problems
  2. Knowledge of global engineering issues including ethical, environmental, sustainability and energy use implications of engineering designs
  3. Ability to convey engineering ideas in oral and written formats
  4. Ability to understand logic and inductive and deductive processes, distinguish between claims, and analyze, criticize, and advocate ideas.

  1. complete a variety of reading and writing tasks that incorporate subject-matter knowledge;
  2. adjust their writing for different audiences, showing awareness of expectations for academic writing in general and adhering to discipline-specific conventions when appropriate;
  3. demonstrate critical thinking and logical reasoning, including strategies coming in a discipline, in the development and organization of ideas in written texts; take into account multiple perspectives and key disciplinary concepts when presenting their ideas in writing; and
