SW 621A - Advanced Practice I: Children, Youth, and Families: Individuals and Families

1. Understand, articulate, and integrate principles, values, and ethics of the social work profession into their advanced practice work with children and families, targeting special populations and issues around social justice (PLO: Values and Ethics).
2. Demonstrate achievement of the professional use of self in practice in private and public agencies, examining potential and real conflicts of interest in various social worker roles (PLOs: Professional Use of Self; Values and Ethics).
3. Critically analyze and apply knowledge of the ecological framework, strengths perspective, biological, psychological, social, and cultural theories and frameworks that explain individual and family interactions in the context of communities (PLO: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
4. Apply critical-thinking skills within professional contexts, including synthesizing and applying appropriate theories of and knowledge to practice interventions with minority and underserved populations (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Diversity).
5. Understand and practice effectively with diverse populations of individuals and families in the context of their communities (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Diversity).
6. Understand and apply the strengths perspective with diverse populations and cultures (PLOs: Diversity; Advocacy).
7. Understand and analyze the effects of discrimination and oppression and advanced social and economic justice for all populations-at-risk, with special attention to the urban underserved disenfranchised populations in relation to the Children, Youth, and Families concentration area (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Advocacy; Diversity).
8. Understand the significant issues and problems such as child abuse and neglect for advanced social work practice in the Children, Youth, and Family concentration and apply culturally appropriate interventions, which are important for problem prevention and resolution (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Advocacy; Diversity; Communication).
9. Demonstrate knowledge and use of the evidence based approach to evaluate empirical data and research in the Children, Youth, and Families concentration area to support choice of intervention (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice).
10. Develop and demonstrate knowledge of the evaluation of one’s own practice and identification of areas of knowledge and skills for personal and professional development, including oral and written skills (PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Professional Use of Self; Communication).
11. Develop specialized knowledge and demonstrate competencies in advanced practice to include assessment methods and skills, intervention planning, intervention methods and skills, practice evaluation methods, and termination with a special focus on the urban underserved and disenfranchised populations.(PLOs: Critical Thinking/Applying Theory to Practice; Advocacy; Diversity; Communication).
