CHEM 621 - Molecular Spectroscopy Units: 3 Investigation of the physical principles of current molecular spectroscopic methods and their applications in chemical, biochemical and biophysical research.
Prerequisites: CHEM 352 with grade C- or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Explain the basics of group theory and topics in molecular quantum mechanics relevant to molecular spectroscopy.
- Explain the physical principles of one- and two-dimensional Fourier-Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (FT-NMR).
- Explain how FT-NMR provides detailed information about structure and dynamics of organic molecules as well as biological macromolecules such as DNA/RNA and protein.
- Explain the origin of selection rules in Vibrational and Rotational Spectroscopy.
- Explain the physical principles of Vibrational and Rotational Spectroscopy and their applications in chemistry/biochemistry research.
- Explain the physical principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy and its application in chemistry/biochemistry research.
- Explain the physical principles of Circular Dichroism (CD) Spectroscopy and its application in chemistry/biochemistry research.
