NURS 450 - Community Health Nursing Units: 2 ; Breadth Area: Social Justice This course explores population-focused approaches to community health promotion, disease prevention and integration of complex concepts in community health systems and policies. Note: The Social Justice Overlay requirement is satisfied upon completion of the two-course sequence, NURS 450 and NURS 451.
Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: NURS 420, NURS 421, NURS 422, NURS 423, NURS 427. Co-requisites: NURS 451. Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements.
Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Explore the expansive roles of community health nurses in health promotion and disease prevention.
- Analyze social, economic, environmental and political determinants of the health of individuals, families and communities within the context of health equity.
- Plan interventions at the individual, community and systems levels based on epidemiologic data, utilization of existing public health resources and community input.
- Examine the importance of cultural humility when partnering with community members to engage in evidence-based community health nursing practice, public policy, disease prevention and health promotion.
- Evaluate effectiveness of community health nursing interventions.
- Apply concepts of quality and safety in nursing to community health practice.

- use a disciplinary perspective to analyze issues of social justice and equity;
- describe the challenges to achieving social justice; and
- identify ways in which individuals and/or groups can contribute to social justice within local communities, nations, or the world.
