NURS 413 - Pediatric Nursing Practice


Units: 2
This course is designed to provide the student with clinical experience in nursing care and management of the pediatric patient and their families with complex medical and surgical health care needs, including simulation.

Prerequisites: B.S. Nursing major and all of: HDEV 380, NURS 320, NURS 321, NURS 322, NURS 323, NURS 326, NURS 327.
Co-requisites: NURS 412.
Credit Restrictions: Repeated course may not count toward Major requirements.

Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 4 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: CR/NC grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Apply age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate care to children with complex health needs in the acute care setting.
  2. Utilize the nursing process to provide family-centered nursing care to children with complex health care needs.
  3. Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for the child with complex health care needs.
  4. Integrate knowledge of nursing care and management of common medical, perioperative and trauma related conditions.
  5. Assess the physiological, psychosocial adaptation and sociocultural influences that impact children and their families in the acute care setting and in simulation.
  6. Demonstrate literacy and competence in organizational information management systems and identify essential patient information that is available in the database to support safe patient care.
  7. Implement appropriate standards of care and evidence based practice guidelines in the care of the child with complex health care needs.
  8. Demonstrate appropriate problem solving and clinical reasoning skills in the provision of nursing care and management of the child and their families.
