SOC 340 - Sociology of Gender


Units: 4 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Diversity
Examines the position that gender is a system of categorization that is created and sustained within the structures and institutions of society. Explores the ways in which gender intersects with other social systems to produce different experiences, perspectives, and opportunities.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-2 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better; and SOC 100.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Online-Asynchronous, or Online-Synchronous.
Grading: A-F grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Understand the causes of social inequities in gendered experiences. You will learn how systems of privilege organized around race, class, and sexual orientation intersect with gender.
  2. Think critically about how gender shapes social life at both individual and structural levels.
  3. Effectively communicate what you have learned about the sociology of gender in both written and oral form.
  4. Read and evaluate scholarly research on gender.
  5. Use your sociological education outside of the classroom and into your everyday life.

  1. analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;

  4. recognize the way that multiple differences (including, for example, gender, class, sexuality, religion, disability, immigration status, gender expression, color/phenotype, racial mixture, linguistic expression, and/or age) within cultural groups complicate individual and group identities.
