ART 242 - Audio Production for Video and Animation Units: 3 The theory and practice of audio production for video, animation, and other applications. Students will learn the fundamentals of sound design and aesthetics, microphone use, and digital recording equipment. Hands on experience recording, editing, mixing and mastering audio.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand basic physics of sound and the terminology: sound wave, frequency/pitch, amplitude/loudness, phase, and timbre.
- understand the nature of digitized audio and outline the basic process for digitizing sound;
- comprehend acoustics; microphone classification, placement and use; theory and practical use of consoles, computers and software; analog/digital recording and storage devices; patching; editing; time code; signal processors; and loudspeakers;
- perform complex audio production techniques using appropriate tools including audio production software;
- understand in-studio and on-location production for video, animation, and other media;
- create, collect, analyze, and evaluate sound effects, Foley, voice and sound tracks for video, animation, and other media;
- complete applied projects that demonstrate the student’s knowledge of recording, editing, mixing, and balancing;
- explore the emotional and physical perception of music, voice and sound and the aesthetics of audio mixing;
- Refine their own work based on critical feedback and self-evaluation;
- Collaborate with peers in audio development and production.
