PH 390 - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Communities and Health Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C From the medicalization of homosexuality to the AIDS epidemic to gender expression, LGBT communities have been defined in many ways in relation to concepts of health. Relying on health humanities, this class explores LGBT cultural expression o health as meaning-making.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements; and PH 130. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe varying definitions of health produced by LGBT communities in the context of the health humanities.
- Show how LGBT communities have used the arts to reflect on health and LGBT identities.
- Relate the ways in which arts and cultural production have been used by LGBT communities to respond to health crises and issues.
- Demonstrate the ability to empathize with others.
