CHEM 442 - Biochemistry II Units: 4 A detailed description of metabolism of biological molecules (carbohydrate, lipids, proteins, amino acids, nucleotides, and nucleic acids), gene expression and replication, and protein synthesis.
Prerequisites: CHEM 441 with grade C- or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Course Typically Offered: Spring ONLY
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Explain the basic principles of bioenergetics and analyze the standard and actual free energy changes of biochemical reactions;
- Outline key cellular metabolic processes;
- Discuss the importance of metabolic regulatory mechanisms;
- Summarize the structural details of nucleic acids and nucleotides;
- Illustrate the enzymatic processes of DNA replication, repair, and recombination;
- Explain the processes that control RNA synthesis and maturation;
- Explain the translation of mRNA into functioning proteins by ribosomes and tRNA.
