CHEM 410 - Advanced Inorganic Chemistry

Units: 4
Fundamental principles of inorganic chemistry with applications to the structure, bonding, and reactivity of main group inorganic compounds, coordination and organometallic compounds, and solid state.

Prerequisites: CHEM 332; and CHEM 350 or CHEM 351, all with grade C- or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Course Typically Offered: Fall ONLY

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe the structure of atoms and rationalize their periodic properties;
  2. Analyze molecular geometry, vibrations, and bonding using group theory;
  3. Formulate and apply theories for the electronic structure of main group, coordination, and organometallic compounds;
  4. Analyze and interpret vibrational and electronic spectra;
  5. Propose reaction mechanisms from kinetic and stereochemical data;
  6. Illustrate and classify the structure of crystalline solids;
  7. Rationalize trends in the thermodynamic properties of solids;
  8. Apply band structure theory to predict the electronic and optical properties of solids.
