POSC 361 - International Relations of the Asia/Indo-Pacific Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D Conflict and cooperation among states in the Asia/Indo-Pacific region. Topics include South China Sea, Korean Peninsula and Taiwan Straits; security arrangements and alliances; regional cooperation mechanisms such as ASEAN and APEC. Interaction of local, national and regional interests.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-2 requirements

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: Differentiate and critique Euro-American narratives of the region from the perspective of AIP scholars;
- Understand the basic concepts and theories in area studies, comparative politics and international relations such as democratization, patronage, hybrid regimes, developmental state, populism, alliances, security dilemma, among others;
- Identify reliable sources of information on the region, and become familiar with current domestic and regional political issues;
- Demonstrate oral and written competency of theories, analytical approaches, empirical content, and basic research used by scholars in studying the AIP region;
- Apply these theories and analytical approaches to real-world scenarios such as territorial conflicts, denuclearization, and terrorism; and,
- Develop teamwork by creating study groups, working in in-class activities, and in data and news reports data bases for the course.

- analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
