CRJ 387 - Medicolegal Death & Cold Case Investigations


Units: 3
Study of the foundations of medicolegal death and cold case investigations, including terminology, concepts, philosophies, and techniques.  Topics include the legal issues and challenges in medicolegal and cold cases, the cause, manner & mode of death, post-mortem changes, and court preparation. 

Strongly Recommended Preparation: CRJ 340.
Prerequisites: CRJ 220.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Understand the function of the coroner/medical examiner offices and medicolegal death investigations;
  2. Explain the multiple classifications and manners of death relating to different types of deaths;
  3. Summarize the techniques used to positively identify a decedent and estimate the postmortem interval;
  4. Discuss the challenges of cold case investigations and current technology used to assist in solving cold cases;
  5. Apply knowledge of medicolegal death investigations and cold case investigations to real cold cases for analysis and examination.
