MUS 633 - Pedagogy of Music Theory

Materials, organization, techniques, and problems of the first two years of collegiate theory and musicianship teaching. Bibliographical survey of texts and materials, sample teaching, and observation of collegiate theory classes.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Baccalaureate degree in music.
Prerequisites: Department consent.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of developmentally appropriate strategies for teaching collegiate music theory.
Design instruction using a variety of modalities, accounting for learner differences.
Demonstrate familiarity with and ability to evaluate curricular materials for music theory and musicianship (i.e. aural skills).
Demonstrate familiarity with a variety of systems for rhythm (i.e Cheve, Gordon, takadimi), melody (solfegge), and overall approach (i.e. Kodaly).
