PHIL 110 - Introduction to Philosophy and the Arts


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-C1
This course will introduce students to basic concepts in philosophy as applied to the arts through the lens of a particular theme, and in relationship with other disciplines. 

Credit Restrictions: Not open to students with credit for PHIL 120 or PHIL 130.

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Introduction to academic, argumentative writing.
  2. Introduction to core understandings of art in philosophical or religious traditions, relevant concepts, and historical context.
  3. Cultivate an openness to the ideas of others and a self-awareness of the strengths and limitations of one’s own aesthetic opinions.
  4. Learn the basics of analyzing the arguments and interpretations of others and creating original arguments and interpretations of one’s own.

  1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the arts using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
  2. respond to aesthetic experiences in the arts and develop an understanding of the integrity of both emotional and intellectual responses; and
  3. in their intellectual and subjective considerations, demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self, the creative arts, and culture.
