GS 101A - Foundations of Success I


Units: 1 ; Breadth Area: GE-E
Develops skills for success in college and beyond.  Activities focus on self agency, growth mindset, working styles, and sense of community; exploration of academic and internship/career opportunities and resources.  Taken during the first semester of the Freshman Year Experience program. 

Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground or Hybrid.
Grading: ABC/NC grading only.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Identify, evaluate, and reflect on their personal working styles and those of others;
  2. Develop and reflect on self-efficacy (the perceived ability to deal with a task or situation), in order to demonstrate self-agency (the actual ability to deal with a task or situation;
  3. Describe instances of success in accomplishing goals/tasks and overcoming challenges during the semester;
  4. Explain how specific campus resources and programs have been critical to their academic success;
  5. Identify a support network of people in the campus and local community;
  6. Identify, practice, and reflect on strategies (e.g., task prioritization, effective studying) important for academic success;
  7. Demonstrate civic/community engagement by researching community organizations and registering for a Freshman Day of Service activity to be completed during Spring semester and by taking part in the Common Read and its associated activities.


E. Lifelong Learning and Self-Development Learning Outcomes
  1. develop intellectual, practical, and/or physical skills and abilities that will serve them throughout their lives;
  2. apply their learning to other pursuits within and outside of the classroom; and
  3. demonstrate the capacity to make informed and ethical decisions.
