HON 309 - Honors Service and Leadership Units: 3 Introduction to the practice and theory of civic leadership, with emphasis upon community engagement. Service learning hours required. Please note: effective spring 2019 this course prefix will change from GS to HON. Discussion Units: 1; Activity Units: 2.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe and explain service learning as purposeful work connected to their disciplinary interests.
- Describe civic or community engagement practices and philosophies.
- Identify and analyze a significant community issue or problem in the Bay Area.
- Survey and outline recent academic perspectives on the student’s selected community issue or problem, drawing from disciplinary as well as community-based literature.
- Identify and collaborate with a service partner in order to construct a meaningful response to the community issue or problem.
- Evaluate the community issue or problem in the context of actual fieldwork.
