MUS 121 - Music Through the Ages Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-C1 This course explores the music of the United States, including folk, religious, jazz and pop music, world music, and European art music. You will improve your ability to listen to music intelligently and deepen your understanding of musical context.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Apply a range of general and specialized terms relating to the study of music;
- demonstrate an in-depth familiarity with several major musical traditions in the Western world and beyond;
- explain ways in which musical expressions relate to the value systems and thought processes of the cultures that create and sustain them; and
- describe one’s aesthetic experience of music in ways that capture one’s imagination, sensitivity, and emotional responses to the sounds heard.
C1. Arts Learning Outcomes - Demonstrate an appreciation of the arts using their intellect, imagination, sensibility, and sensitivity;
- respond to aesthetic experiences in the arts and develop an understanding of the integrity of both emotional and intellectual responses; and
- in their intellectual and subjective considerations, demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among the self, the creative arts, and culture.
