PHIL 301 - Modern Logic


Units: 3
Advanced course in symbolic logic. Modern logic is more powerful than traditional Aristotelean logic, symbolization covering a greater range of inferences. Modern logic includes results such as Godel’s incompleteness theorem, no system of logic can prove all mathematical truths.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements; and PHIL 100.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Students will be able to write and express themselves clearly, and with academic rigor
  2. Students will be able to understand and present arguments, analyze the arguments of others, and express these criticisms orally and in writing
  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply the central logical concepts of truth, implication and validity
