HIST 277 - Science and Culture in the History of Medicine in the United States


Units: 3
History of medicine in the US from the colonial period to the present, including: emergence of the medical profession, the rise of the hospital, the relationship between medicine and science, and the role of politics, cultural beliefs, and religious values.

Prerequisites: Completion of GE area A2.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Course Typically Offered: Variable Intermittently


Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. develop the ability to think critically and to communicate effectively about the interactions between medicine, science and social change. “Communication” in this course includes working on writing skills by writing a research paper and book review as well as participating in discussion board forums.
  2. develop students’ skills in presenting arguments, in written form in accordance with appropriate scholarly conventions.
  3. develop a critical understanding of primary source material and demonstrate an appreciation of historical interpretations and methodologies.
  4. critically evaluate key themes and issues in the history of medicine in the light of historical/historiographical frameworks.
