POSC 326 - Government and Politics of Africa South of the Sahara


Units: 3
The governments of the nations of Africa south of the Sahara, with special reference to comparative colonial policies, nationalist movements, political parties, and the problems of nation building; comparative economic systems and the role of the military.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse political environment of sub-Saharan Africa including the current political situation and the essential historical background.
  2. Demonstrate a comparative understanding of African politics including competing theoretical perspectives on the process of African political and economic “development.”
  3. Demonstrate the ability to research and write a well-argued 8-10 page analytic paper based on the evidence presented and to present the results in a professional power point presentation.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, theories and themes in the field of comparative politics.
  5. Demonstrate effective peer collaboration and learning through group study and discussion.
