POSC 327 - Political Systems of Latin America Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D Political development, instability, and revolution in a comparative framework. Case studies of major countries and regional patterns in: economic development, democratization, political culture, coups and military dictatorships, and social movements from both an historical and contemporary perspective.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Recall key political, social, and economic actors and issues in Latin America
- Thoughtfully and analytically discuss key individuals, historical events and processes and how they have led to present political conditions in the region
- Develop and articulate an understanding of power dynamics in the region as regards access to the political system and voice in the political process
- Analyze current events in the region by applying skills and knowledge acquired throughout the semester

- analyze how power and social identity affect social outcomes for different cultural and economic groups using methods of social science inquiry and vocabulary appropriate to those methods;
