POSC 345 - International Law Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D Norms and rules about international order. Includes laws of war and peace, human rights, trade and environmental protection, humanitarian intervention, and principles of jurisdiction. Focus on evolution from state- to human-centered order.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate oral and written competency of the basic concepts and foundational principles of current international law;
- Improve factual knowledge about the creation, implementation, and enforcement of international laws, the text of treaties, court cases, and judgments by international courts;
- Analyze the intersection of international politics and international law, their effects on international political, economic, and social orders, and their unequal consequences on people, communities, and states;
- Understand the reciprocal relationship between international law, identities, and interests;
- Develop their research and analytical skills by using databases of international treaties, and by evaluating and critiquing current approaches to the study of international law; and and
- Cooperate and collaborate with team members in studying, interpreting, and applying international treaties to current world problems.
