Evolution of the study and practice of global governance and the United Nations; focus on foreign policies and actions of selected UN member-states; student participation as delegates to a Model UN Conference

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-2 requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Repeatability: May be repeated once for credit for a maximum of 6 units.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Understand and articulate the theoretical underpinnings of global governance and the real-world operation of the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and international non-government organizations;
Analyze the foundations and operations of existing international organizations, and current debates on human, ecological, security, economic, political, social, and cultural issues as they pertain to selected countries;
Develop an appreciation for, and apply knowledge of, diversity, inclusivity and multicultural competencies to promote equity and social justice at the global level;
Demonstrate expert knowledge of selected countries (their institutions, political processes, and public policies) and of the United Nations and specialized agencies (their goals, missions, and operations) through sustained research;
Demonstrate through oral and written competence, an understanding of the theories, concepts, empirical content related to global governance;
Improve written and oral communication skills used in formal, professional settings;
Generate strategies for negotiations and bargaining; and
Gain practical experience in negotiation and teamwork, and awareness of career opportunities in diplomacy and in international organizations.
