PHIL 321 - Philosophy and Science Fiction


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Social Justice
Philosophical discussion about topics contained explicitly or implicitly in science fiction writing and film.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online Asynchronous or Online Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Engage with a variety of media, create original arguments, construct, evaluate, and analyze the arguments presented in these media, and express these criticisms orally and in writing
  2. demonstrate knowledge of the study of ideas as they relate to science fiction, including relevant concepts, theories, methods, and historical contexts
  3. write clear, academically rigorous, argumentative essays.
  4. Understand how these works drive social change.
