ES 305 - Reel Injun: American Indians in Film Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-D; Social Justice Critical study of portrayals of American Indians in the mass media (film, television, advertising, journalism, arts) and the consequences of simplification, disinformation, and the promotion of stereotypes.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area D1-3 requirements. Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid or Online-Asynchronous. Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice). Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-UD-D - Upper Division Social Sciences, Overlay - Social Justice Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Students will be able recognize contemporary ethnography and media by native producers and identify cultural interpretations and critical race theory.
- Students will be able to demonstrate skills in media literacy, critical thinking and analysis as they explore more objective and accurate cultural representations of American Indians.
- Students will be able demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply the frameworks and key concepts related to the consequences of simplification, disinformation and the promotion of stereotypes to promote equity and social justice in our communities. Students will gain Media literacy.
