MLL 444 - Survey Spanish Literature II: 18th Century to Present


Units: 3
Survey of Spanish literature from the 18th century to the present. Socio-political, aesthetic, philosophical and literary ideas studied through selections of major works; neo-classicism, romanticism, naturalism, the Generation of ‘98, and modern and contemporary authors.

Prerequisites: MLL 343 and completion of GE areas A1, A2 and A3.
Co-requisites: MLL 345.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Students will be presented a panoramic knowledge of the literature produce from the 18th century to the present, including the most important trends, schools and periods.
  2. Student will able to identify and analyze literary works of different genres (narrative, poetry, and drama) and its connections with the broader cultural milieu.
  3. Student will able to understand the political and cultural implications of the literatures produced by canonical and marginal authors in Spain during the last three centuries.
  4. Students will be confronted with the implication of the development of a modern Spanish in confrontation with current trends in cultural studies, gender studies and post colonialism.
