MLL 323 - Francophone Culture and Civilization through Cinema


Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-UD-C; Social Justice
French culture through French and Francophone films illustrating artistic, political, social, and philosophical schools, to offer a better understanding of a variety of cultures from Francophone countries around the world and analysis of cultural differences.

Strongly Recommended Preparation: Upper division status (greater than 60 earned semester units) and completion of lower division Area C requirements.
Prerequisites: Completion of GE Areas A1, A2, A3 and B4 with grade C- (CR) or better; and MLL 222.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Hybrid, or Online Asynchronous or Online Synchronous.
Grading: A-F or CR/NC (student choice).

Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills in reading and writing about issues presented in theoretical texts and films.
  2. Students will be able to translate their knowledge of the historical. political and socio-cultural contexts from within the Franco-Phone world into in-depth analyses of the films.
  3.  Students will be able to challenge their pre-conceptions, and effectively differentiate between facts and assumptions based on stereotypes and accepted norms. 
  4. Students will be able to formulate issues illustrated in the films and correlate them to the relevant political and cultural contexts of the decades in which the films were produced.
