BIOL 691 - University Thesis Units: 1-5 Development and writing of a formal research paper for submission to the university in the specified format. Supervision by a departmental committee, at least one of whom must be a Cal State East Bay faculty member. Oral defense required.
Strongly Recommended Preparation: Consultation with thesis advisor. Prerequisites: Department consent. Repeatability: May be repeated for credit with approval by department for a maximum of 5 units. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: CR/NC grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Demonstrate a broad and sophisticated understanding that contributes to biological concepts and principles across all levels of biological organization, from ions to ecosystems.
- Demonstrate expertise in a specific area of biological science.
- Independently apply the scientific method to formulate testable biological hypotheses, analyze empirical data, and synthesize the results of the analysis.
- Clearly communicate the design and results of an observational or experimental analysis in a variety of formats, including the graduate thesis, scientific paper, scientific poster, and oral presentation.
- Gather and evaluate primary scientific literature and judge the value of the information presented in relation to particular biological questions.
