SLHS 600 - Foundations of Clinical Practicum


Units: 2
Basic principles of clinical management, including foundations of therapy, performance analysis, professional documentation, development of therapeutic hierarchies, cueing, data collection, behavior management, reinforcements and caregiver training. Emphasis on clinical/professional writing. 

Prerequisites: Admission to M.S. Speech-Language Pathology program.
Co-requisites: SPPA 694.
Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground.
Grading: A-F grading only.
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  1. Write a terminal therapy objective, for a client with a communication disorder.
  2. Write a hierarchical task sequence for a terminal therapy objective.
  3. Discuss various clinical approaches and procedures routinely used during speech-language treatment or assessment.
  4. List the key components of an assessment of a client with a communication disorder.
  5. Record client responses (i.e. collect data) during therapy.
  6. Write a professional clinical report, summarizing results of therapy.
  7. Summarize client/patient information and verbally present information about a client/patient.
  8. Develop skills in professional conduct and collaboration.
