PHIL 100 - Workshop in Critical Thinking Units: 3 ; Breadth Area: GE-A3 Development of clarity and focus in thinking, with attention to rigor, modes of explanation, validity of reasoning, etc. Must earn C- or better for GE credit.
Prerequisites:
Completion of GE A2 with C- (CR) or better Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground, or Online-Asynchronous or Online-Synchronous. Grading: ABC/NC grading only. Breadth Area(s) Satisfied: GE-A3 - Lower Division Critical Thinking Course Typically Offered: Fall & Spring
Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- locate and recognize the arguments being used to support positions.
- differentiate claims and their parts, both explicit and implicit, based on their relationship to support.
- evaluate arguments based on different standards as appropriate to the sort of argument, including awareness of common fallacies.
- construct arguments of varying complexity based on a variety of explicit strategies.

- understand logic and its relation to language, elementary inductive and deductive reasoning, and formal and informal fallacies;
- demonstrate the ability to distinguish among different sorts of claims, such as statements of opinion, reasoned judgments, proofs, and articles of faith;
- develop the ability to identify, analyze, evaluate, and present arguments, and construct arguments both to support and refute claims; and
- develop the ability to reason inductively and deductively.
