MUS 421 - Orchestral Literature Units: 3 An historical survey of orchestral literature with a focus on important composers and their respective contributions to the genre. Includes the study of significant orchestral compositions. Field trips may be required.
Prerequisites: MUS 212. Possible Instructional Methods: On-ground. Grading: A-F grading only. Student Learning Outcomes - Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Trace the development of the orchestra as a musical performance medium from the baroque period through the present.
- Analyze works for orchestra by significant composers, and present findings in class and group settings.
- Analyze works for a variety of orchestral configurations, i.e. chamber orchestras, symphony orchestras, etc.
- Analyze works and contributions by composers who represent a variety of diverse populations, such as female composers, composers of color, and other culturally diverse composers.
- Relate orchestral compositions to a variety of extra-musical events, such as political movements, cultural developments, national and global events, etc.
